Getting down to brass tacks: an emerging designer talks about the business side of fashion
March 11, 2010 by Giannina Silverman
I found this great article on Allison Lewis, founder of the emerging label “Lewis”, where she is interviewed by Smart Money Small Business, and speaks on the business side of fashion and running her growing business in a down-economy. She also discusses getting in front of influential fashion editors, which helped her visibility tremendously.

“In 2009, the company took in $40,000, up from $12,000 in 2008. She expects the label to bring in $65,000 to $85,000 in 2010, and to turn a profit within two seasons.”
So she essentially has been loosing money until now and expects to make a profit by end of 2010/2011? I guess it won’t be much given what she’s bringing in to-date? I just don’t understand the financials of this situation. Is it simply passion that keeps driving her? Or am I not understanding the situation?
I’d love to see some articles about some fashion brands (small/start-ups) that are making a livable income for the founders , 2+ years on from inception.
Hi Lib,
Great insight. If I come across any such articles I will post. Though it’s pretty typical for any start-up business to be in the red for at least the first 3 years, given the costs of getting off the ground, marketing, manufacturing, etc.
